Therapeutic Approach and Clinical Experiences
I adapt my therapeutic approach on a case by case basis to best fit my client, their needs and their situation. I have developed and refined my therapeutic and clinical skills to include several evidence based approaches including; Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness and EMDR therapy (Trauma informed therapy), and Brainspotting. When working with a youth that self-harms and has difficulty regulating their emotions, I typically use DBT and work to develop a strong rapport with my client and help facilitate improved interpersonal communication skills in my client. When working with a young child with an anxiety related disorder I use animated video’s, games, worksheets and play to provide CBT based psycho-education in a concrete manner for the child and we use step-wise experiments to facilitate improved tolerance and reduce avoidance. With young children I involve parents directly, whereas with older adolescents, I work with parents in more of a consultative manner so that they can be supportive and understanding towards their child.
I have over 30 years experience. My early training and work was with young children at Hotel Dieu Hospital and Queen’s University in Kingston and with Children’s Mental Health in Belleville and then in Kingston; assessing young children with autism, neuro-developmental disorders and behaviour problems, and providing play therapy and counselling support to parents both in home and in the office. Later in my career, I worked for the Frontenac, Prince Edward County and Ottawa-Carleton District School Boards doing Psycho-educational assessments. I also worked several years in Children’s Mental Health in Lanark County broadening my clinical work to include adolescents and children and youth in care before moving to Ottawa 22 years ago to go into private practice at 98 Centrepointe. In addition to the experience listed above, I also have clinical experience with attachment difficulties, eating disorders and digital technology addictions.
