Therapeutic Approaches, Clinical Experience, and Additional Information
In therapy, my goal is to help you move towards living a more fulfilling life and not being so controlled by your emotions, thoughts and symptoms. While it depends on what you’re dealing with, therapy with me is generally a combination of support and skills. I believe that talking about what is going on in your life (or about the past) can definitely be helpful but making changes in your life is going to have the biggest long-term impact. These changes might be using skills to help you deal with thoughts in different ways, manage your emotions better or communicate more effectively… or they might be taking an important (positive) risk you’ve been avoiding, like jumping back into the dating pool, trying out a new hobby or having a tough conversation with a loved one.
I am a big fan of evidence-based treatments (e.g., Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, etc), but I aim to make the therapy fit with you, your needs, your interests and your life.
My therapy style is warm, gently direct, psych geeky (get ready to learn some facts!), skills-based, open to feedback and humorous. My favourite sessions often include a combination of facing difficult emotions and laughing really hard.
For those who are neurodivergent (e.g. Autism, ADHD), my approach is neuro-affirmative in the sense that I believe that Autism, ADHD and other neurodivergent brain-types are just variations of human experience. My goal is to help you find ways to get your own particular needs met so that you can better enjoy your life and let your strengths shine through. You’ll be my guide as to what is important to you, but this might include better understanding your diagnos(es), working on self-acceptance, addressing sensory needs, advocating for yourself, working on work/life balance, trying to understand others, being kinder to yourself, learning to manage your emotions better, communicating more effectively or something similar.
I strongly value diversity and have a long history of working with people from a variety of different (ethnic, religious, 2SLGBTQI+, etc.) backgrounds. I am always learning about different identities, experiences and cultures so that I can better serve my clients. That said, I’m also very aware that each person’s experiences are unique (and sometimes someone’s identities have nothing to do with why they are seeking out therapy), so I do my best to understand my clients’ experience rather than make assumptions.
I also speak Spanish and provide therapy in Spanish.
