Therapeutic Approach and Clinical Experiences
I am a registered School and Clinical (child and youth) Psychologist. I provide comprehensive Psychological and Psycho-educational Assessments for school age children (elementary to secondary grades) and post-secondary students (college and university). My areas of focus include: Learning Disabilities, Intellectual Disabilities, Giftedness, AD/HD, and social, emotional, and behavioural challenges. Having worked in the Psychology Department of a School Board for the past 20 years, I have a thorough knowledge of the types of services, accommodations, modifications, and supports available to students with learning and/or social, emotional or behavioural functioning difficulties. I also have extensive experience consulting with parents, school staff, and community agencies/professionals in developing treatment plans for children and youth. I provide group and individual therapy to children and youth struggling with anxiety using a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approach. I also provide psycho-education to their parents to assist them with understanding their child’s anxiety, how families can get stuck in a worry cycle, and how they can foster their child’s ability to take action and approach anxiety provoking situations rather than avoid them. I provide professional trainings and workshops to parents, school staff, and mental health professionals in the areas of: Anxiety, AD/HD, Executive Functioning, Learning Disabilities, Violence Threat Risk Assessment, Suicide Intervention Skills Training, and Collaborative Problem Solving.
I have worked in the Special Education Department of a school board for over 25 years and have been the Head Psychologist for the Psychology Department for the past 21 years. For the past 15 years, I have also worked part-time in a private practice in Perth, Ontario providing therapy to children and youth struggling with anxiety, and conducting Psychological Assessments for adults to support Ontario Disability Support Program applications (ODSP). I have provided educational workshops to parents at the JDN Centre for Children in Perth, Ontario that provides services to families with children with AD/HD and Autism. I have also provided educational workshops to parents and staff of various private and public schools, and community organizations in the Ottawa area. I have taught undergraduate courses in the Psychology Department at Carleton University (e.g., Theories of Personality, Cognitive Development). I have supervised several candidates going through the registration process with the College of Psychologists of Ontario, and I supervise school psychology practicum placements of Ph.D. candidates from the University of Ottawa.
